Cyclists support Football Legends
Thirteen cyclists will this morning cycle from Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre to Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe to raise awarenes about this Sunday’s Football Legends Association (FLA) international friendly match against Zambian legends.
The cyclists, who represent Mulanje and Blantyre cycling clubs, yesterday said they believe their three-day 300-kilometre journey will show their appreciation of the football legends’ contribution to the country’s football growth.
“The football legends made Malawi proud back in the days when they lifted prestigious trophies including the East and Central African Senior Challenge Cup thrice in 1978, 1979 and 1988. Most of us were young, then, but we enjoyed the moments,” said one of the cyclists Thomas Dube.

FLA board chairperson Jim Kalua yesterday said it is a great honour to see cyclists supporting their initiatives in a special way.
He said the cyclists will today stopover at Balaka Stadium, where the football legends play a ceremonial match against Balaka Select, before departing the following day for Dedza Stadium, where the legends will face Dedza Select.
“Then, on Sunday, the cyclists will proceed to BNS, where football legends will be up against Mpira M’mudzi Mwathu in a curtain-raiser to the international match,” said Kalua.
He said preparations for the game against Zambian legends are at an advanced stage and tickets are available at various selling points and through TNM Mpamba.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to appreciate massive support from the corporate world and we appeal for more assistance,” said Kalua.
This is the third time since 2023 that Malawi legends are meeting their Zambian counterparts. In their first match, Malawi lost 2-1 away before settling for a goalless draw at home last year.
Malawi Legends team is expected to feature three foreign-based members, namely South Africa-based Ernest Mtawali and Zimbabwe-based Joseph Kamwendo, who are already in the country, while US-based Mphatso Namwali is expected in the country this week.
FLA is a body of former Malawi football players. The number of its members is now over 220.
